IV. Reading

Why is the White House White?

We have all heard of the famous White House in Washington, D.C.,  the official residence of the President of America, but how many of us  know why it is white.
It is known that original building was set on fire by the British during the British-American War of 1812, when the Americans fought for their independence. Later the building was restored and painted white (to hide the smoke strains on the walls), and it has kept that colour since that time as a part of American history.
The White House was designed by James Hoban in 1792. All presidents, except George Washington, have lived here. There are 132 rooms and 20 baths and showers. The largest room on the main floor is East Room. Here receptions and balls are held. The famous elliptical Blue Room is for state dinners and receptions. The President and his family live on the upper floors. The President's office, the Oval Room or the Oval Office, is in the west wing. The East wing is used by officials and staff members.

Statue of Liberty.

For many immigrants from the world the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbour was the symbol of freedom. The Statue gave them hope of a new life in America. They saw America as the land of boundless opportunities. They were sure that in this country their dreams of wealth and success would come true.
The enormous statue was a gift of the people of France. It was designed by Frederic August Bartholdi. In 1877, the American congress said "Yes" to the use of a site for the statue. The French raised the money ($ 250, 000) AND Bartholdi began to work in Paris in 1874. Ten years later, on May 21, 1885, the statue was finished. In June 1885, the statue arrived in 214 packing cases from France. Fifteen months later the monument was ready. The hollow bronze figure is fitted with 225 tones of copper sheet. The Statue is called "Libby". In 1956, the island of Bedloe was given the name: Liberty island. More than a million people visit it every year.

Home assignment: to make up a dialogue about visiting the places of interest in the USA.
